Welcome to Oelwein

Oelwein is a small melting pot, rich in diversity and culture. The dawn of the railroad brought an influx of people from various cultures and countries who followed the railroad to Oelwein. Oelwein was named "Hub City" because of the rail lines coming into town and the repair shops located there. Even though most of the railroad business was moved in the 1980's, the railroad made Oelwein and the surrounding area what it is today.

 Meet Our Ambassadors

Karon Henderson

Karon has been serving as an Ambassador since 2002. She was born in Oelwein Mercy Hospital, attended Oelwein schools and Parsons College. After working at Donaldson company for 35 years, she retired and enjoys volunteering and traveling. She and Bud have three children. One important reason for being an Ambassador is seeing Oelwein's businesses personally and recommending their services to others in the community. The completion of the Williams Center and other additions to the High School campus are among her favorite memories.

Sue Johnson

Sue moved to Oelwein in 1959 with her husband Gus. They raised three children and have 5 grandchildren. Sue has a degree from Drake University in Elementary Education. Sue volunteers in many capacities within the community including RSVP Program, Church, Volunteers for Youth, All Families Matter, OCAD and Positively Oelwein, Friends of the Library, P.E.O., Tuesday Tourist Club and various book and study groups. Sue believes that we are fortunate to live in a plce with leaders in local government, schools and churches and various other organizations who care about the present and future of Oelwein and work hard to maximize our potential. Being an Ambassador is a pleasure for Sue from being a part of the group itself and going to various businesses to acknowledge improvements, new owners, long-time owners or just bringing attention to the many who keep us going so well.

Spiffy Award

The Positively Oelwein Committee will once again be accepting nominations for nice looking properties in Oelwein. One residential property in each quadrant of town and one business property will be awarded the Spiffy Award each month beginning June 1st and running through October. If you have a property you would like to nominate, please do so by calling the OCAD office at 319-283-1105. Nominated properties will remain on the list of nominations for the committee to vote on throughout the year, so there is no need to nominate the same property more than once. If you have questions, please call the office.
