Established in 1926, Mercy Hospital has been a part of the Oelwein community for nearly 80 years. With over 190 employees, it boasts 25 beds for medical/surgical acute and skilled care and 39 beds for long-term and skilled nursing care. Mercy also provides a broad scope of outpatient services to residents living in the Oelwein and surrounding communities.

Ambulance Service
A Hospital-based Ambulance Service is authorized by the Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Service as a 24/7 Paramedic Level Service responding to approximately 1,050 ambulance requests per year. It is also an affiliate member of the Iowa Emergency Services Association.

In addition to Mercy Hospital, three physician clinics, three nursing homes, an assisted living facility, three drug stores, a wellness center for all ages, five dentists, three optometrists, two chiropractic clinics, and several child care facilities provide a solid base for a healthy community.

Additional strategic care is only a short distance away in Waterloo (Covenant Medical Center and Allen Hospital), the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, or at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

The Oelwein Police Department is a civil service police agency established to protect and serve the citizens of Oelwein, Iowa, in 1903. The Oelwein Communications Center receives calls for service from the public and other law enforcement and emergency services via the Emergency 911 telephone, business telephone, teletype, and/or by radio.

Officers provide general law enforcement activity such as criminal investigations, traffic safety education and enforcement, and crime prevention patrol as well as specialized areas of law enforcement.

D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is presented by a uniformed Oelwein Police Officer.

R.A.I.D. (Rural Area Interdiction Detail) is a drug enforcement task force which the Oelwein Police Department is an active part of.

The Oelwein Police keep the peace, investigate and enforce local, state and federal laws; and work with the citizens of Oelwein to keep the community safe and violence free.

Founded in 1893, today the department has a total of twenty-three volunteer firefighters and four career personnel. There is a firefighter on duty at the station twenty-four hours a day for a quicker response to emergency calls. The Oelwein Fire Department is involved with much more than fire fighting. We do many special assignments consisting of lockouts, storm watches, medical, carbon monoxide, confined space rescue, automobile extrication, farm and industrial rescues, unlocking dwellings, and unusual odors.

The Department has three pumper/engines, one 85 foot aerial ladder truck, one 2000 gallon tanker, one heavy rescue, and one brush truck.

The two main fund raisers hosted every year are the Fathers Day Omelet breakfast and the spaghetti supper held on Wednesday of Fire Prevention week. The money made from the fund raisers is used to purchase fire and rescue equipment only.
